Moths that fly by day are not properly to be called moths; they do not excite that pleasant sense of dark autumn nights and ivy‑blossom which the commonest moth asleep behind a curtain generally arouses. These are hybrid creatures, neither gay like butterflies nor sombre like their own species. Nevertheless the present specimen, with his narrow hay‑coloured wings, fringed with a tassel of the same colour, seemed to be content with life.

He was a little creature, but very energetic. Watching him, one felt a queer pity for him. He was fighting against fate. He would fly from one corner to another. He would vibrate his wings. He would struggle. Yet all his energy could not beat back the slow approach of death.

Death is stronger than I am. It rolled its eye upon him. His body shrank. The wings fluttered, fell. He was dead. I looked at him, and it seemed to me that the source of all energy had been defeated by this simple, inexorable fact.

One could only watch the extraordinary efforts made by those tiny wings against the coming of nothingness. There was no more struggle. He lay utterly quiet. The insignificant little creature had fought a magnificent battle against the great power of death.
