Many people choose mountain climbing as their favourite weekend activity. Unlike simple walking on flat ground, climbing demands both physical strength and mental self-control. Last month, I joined a small group to climb a local mountain that stands more than 800 meters high. Our guide reminded us to respect nature and never leave rubbish along the trail. We passed thick woods, loose stones and several steep switchbacks. Some members in our group felt exhausted halfway and wanted to turn back. Our guide encouraged them not to rush. He told us that mountain climbing is not a race to reach the top before others. We can set our own speed and enjoy the views step by step. When we finally stood on the summit, the wind swept across our faces. Clouds floated below our feet, and distant hills rolled like soft waves. The sense of achievement was amazing. After this trip, I understand that mountains do not only test our bodies. They also teach us to accept limits, manage tiredness and appreciate quiet natural beauty around us.
