How Pole Vault Works Pole vault is an exciting track and field event. First, the athlete runs quickly with a flexible pole. Next, he plants the pole into a small box on the ground. The pole bends and stores energy. Then it pushes the athlete upward. He twists his body to go over the bar without touching it. At last, he falls down safely onto thick soft mats. It takes speed, balance and good skills.
