The Skill of Pole Vault
Many people think pole vault only depends on jumping power. In fact, it combines speed, timing and technique.
Before the jump, the athlete practises his run-up many times. He must control his pace carefully.
When he plants the pole, the angle is very important. A good angle helps the pole release energy to lift him high.
The hardest part is clearing the bar. Athletes have to bend their bodies into an arch to avoid knocking it down.
Even small mistakes can make the bar fall.
Pole vaulters train for years to reach their best performance.
