People usually focus on quarterbacks and running backs in American football. Few fans pay much attention to the punter.
Yet the punter is a tactical weapon on special teams.
His task is not simply to kick the ball as far as possible. He has to control distance, height and spin.
After receiving a fast long snap, he has only a short window to set his body and release the kick.
If he kicks too long, the opponent may have room for a big return. If he kicks too short, the enemy gains field position easily.
Great punters can pin the ball close to the goal line, making it extremely hard for the returner to advance.
It is a skill built on thousands of repeated kicks and calm pressure control.
